What is CBD?
CBD is the abbreviation for Cannabidiol, which is one of many active cannabinoids identified in cannabis. It is a major phytocannabinoid, accounting for up to 40% of the plant’s natural extract. Unlike tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), CBD does not present psychoactive effects on the Endocannabinoid System (ECS), rather it provides potent anti-inflammatory and anti-stress properties.
What is a cannabinoid?
Cannabinoids are a group of naturally occurring compounds that cohesively form the active constituents of herbal cannabis. Cannabinoids also naturally exist via direct relation to the Endocannabinoid System (ECS) which is a group of endogenous cannabinoid receptors located in the mammalian brain and throughout the central and peripheral nervous systems. Researchers have identified two distinctive cannabinoid receptors naturally present within cell membranes: CB1, predominantly present in the nervous system, connective tissues, glands and organs; and CB2, predominantly found in the immune system and its associated structures. Tissues throughout the body contain both CB1 and CB2 receptors, each linked to a different action.
